CLASSES and PROGRAMS

The West Michigan Archery Center (WMAC) offers a range of class-based learning opportunities for archers of all ages.  Our classes are all led by USA Archery certified coaches, and are built upon tested curricula and programs for a wide range of archers.

Introduction to archery

This six-week course provides an introductory overview to the sport, and introduces basics of the bow and arrow, shooting technique, and appropriate safety practices.  Courses are 60 minutes long for each session, taking place on Tuesday evenings (6-7pm or 7:30 - 8:30pm).  Cost: $60 per archer.  Open to individuals age 8 and up.  Youth archers need to have parents on site (or in the class!) during the session.

Register here for our next class - Starting August 8, 2017

JUNIOR OLYMPIC ARCHERY DEVELOPMENT (JOAD)

Young archers who wish to develop their interest in archery to compete in target archery are encouraged to join the Top Nock JOAD program - an individualized, practice based learning program that addresses specific archery goals and shooting form of every archer.  The program is open to those who have completed Introduction to Archery or to archers who can demonstrate basic shooting and safety skills to one of our coaches.  Those who are new to archery and age 12 or older can join our "Bronze" JOAD program without previously taking Introduction to Archery.

JOAD currently takes place on Saturday mornings in Spring and Summer months from 8:30am to 11:30am, with our advanced archers shooting outdoors in the spring and summer, while newer archers shooting in our indoor range during that time.  JOAD participants pay a seasonal membership ($130 for non-members, $100 for members; additional $20 for the season to cover equipment rental) covering 10+ weeks of individualized and group instruction, including coaching, information sessions, and participation in the JOAD pin recognition program.  Additional information and registration on site.  JOAD is a certified program with USA Archery, taught by our team of certified coaches.

are you interested in archery...

...but not really sure what to do, or not sure if you want to take a full class?

Come and join us for one of our "Give Archery a Try!" events to just try archery out for free.  We will have USA Archery certified coaches, plus many of our competitive youth and adult archers on hand to help you out and show you what archery is all about.  Events are scheduled periodically based on coach availability - check here for our calendar of events.

This event is open to the public, and will give everyone who shows up an opportunity to try shooting with our equipment (or bring your own, if you have some equipment but are not sure how to properly use it) and learn from experienced coaches and archers.  While here, you can learn about upcoming introductory classes and events, as well as membership and open shooting opportunities. Whether you are 8 or 80, or anywhere in between, archery is a sport that provides great opportunities for fun and recreation, competition, or hunting opportunities.  Come and join us to find out more.

Thanks to our sponsor for this event: Cedar Springs Whitetails Unlimited.

What is "JOAD"?

JOAD (Junior Olympic Archery Development) is the official youth development program of the USA Olympic Archery program.  There are several JOAD (pronounced "Joe-add") Clubs around the country, each of which is led by USA Archery certified instructors. The Top Nock JOAD (named for the grooved end of an arrow) program is fortunate to have a number of certified instructors ranging from intermediate to advanced. The club is open to any youth archer age 9 up to 20 and they can compete in different age divisions.

JOAD Current Cost and Registration

  • The Summer Session of JOAD will run from July 1 to September 30.
  • See the flyer/schedule with specific details HERE.
  • Archers can register for the summer session online HERE.

WMAC's JOAD program levels

Top Nock JOAD is divided into three levels to allow archers to focus on what they want to achieve, and to optimize practice time with our coaches.

JOAD Bronze
Our Bronze level program introduces archers to JOAD, and focuses on basic shooting form, different styles of archery, understanding equipment, and introduction to competitive archery.  Our coaches work with our archers to define goals, and with our parents to address equipment, tournaments and forms of archery, and individual archers goals and progress.

JOAD Silver
Our Silver program refines skills for archers who wish to compete in competitive archery and tournaments.  Silver level archers have an individual coach who works with the archers and their families to prepare for and compete in local and state level archery tournaments.

JOAD Gold
Gold program archers participate in our Competitive Team, and practice more frequently to be competitive in state and national level tournaments.  All Gold level archers will also receive focused training with the Easton developed curriculum, supervised by our Advanced Coaching team.

Transitions between Bronze and Silver levels can take place each season, with the change taking place on the first day of a new season.  Transitions from Silver to Gold level are made at the end of the outdoor season, with the introduction of new Gold archers taking place through the Easton curriculum in the fall.  Transitions to the next level are based on coach recommendations, and are determined in consultation with each archer and their parents.

JOAD Schedule

All JOAD archers should arrive for Saturday sessions by 8:30am to set up equipment and warm up, so that archers can be shooting by 9:00am (if not earlier).  During the spring and summer, some archers will be shooting outside, while others will remain indoors to focus on technique.  Outdoor practice is dependent on archers having their own equipment and/or archer abilities as reviewed by JOAD coaches.

JOAD Gold archers also participate in a Wednesday practice session, with details provided by JOAD coaches.

All archers should arrive on time, and should notify coaches of planned absences.  Archers can make up missed sessions during open shooting the following week.

JOAD archers can train for archery at any level, whether just focusing on recreation and fun shooting or preparing for competition, our JOAD program offers options for everyone.  Those who wish to shoot as a competitive sport can work with our program to compete in local, state, regional, & national (or even international) tournaments.  Our program has had several archers set state and national records, win national championships, and even earn a seat on the USAT world team to compete in other countries representing the United States on behalf of USA Archery.
